Q

Explain Deprivation Dwarfism

A

The lack of physical and emotional care within these institutions causes neurological and physical damage. Children don’t grow properly and some develop bone and muscle problems such as osteoporosis and stunted growth.

Neurological damage is common, with neurons used to form attachments being not present or simply unable to form adequately.

Q

Where was most of the research done into institutionalisation conducted?

A

Romania.

The Romanian government encouraged women to have several children which led to severe overpopulation and many orphanages were full of kids who couldn’t be looked after properly.

These years of maternal deprivation and poor care led to significant emotional and physical damage to the children and psychologists followed up and studied them to find the effects of living within these institutions for prolonged periods of time.

Q

Explain Cycle of Privation

A

The inadequate care received by children within institutions is then replicated within their own parenting styles. Their children are subject to poor care and emotional attention which leads to a cycle of bad parenting and deprivation, also called “The Cycle of Privation.”
