1
Q

What is an inhibitor?

A

A substance that reduces the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction by affecting the enzyme molecule.

2
Q

What are the 2 types of inhibitors?

A

Competitive

Non competitive

3
Q

What are competitive inhibitors?

A

Molecules with a similar shape to the substrate. Fit into the active site of an enzyme so substarte can’t enter- reaction can’t happen

4
Q

What are reversible inhibitors?

A

Inhibitors that occupy the active site of an enzyme temporarily. Substrate can enter after inhibitor leaves.

5
Q

What are Non competitive inhibitors?

A

Inhibitors that don’t have a similar shape to substrate.

6
Q

Where do non competitive inhibitors bind to enzymes?

A

Bind to the side of he enzyme away from the active site

7
Q

What effect on an enzymes shape do non competitive inhibitirs have?

A

Inhibitor distorts tertiary structure.

Changes shape of active site so substarte can’t fit.

8
Q

What is the name for the place where a non competitive inhibitor binds to an enzyme?

A

Allosteric site

9
Q

What is another name for non competitive inhibitors?

A

Allosteric inhibitors

10
Q

What effect does an increase it substrate concentration have with non competitive inhibitors?

A

No effect as active site not being fought over.

11
Q

Are non competitive inhibitors reversible?

A

Reversible and non reversible

12
Q

What is a use for end-product inhibition?

A

Negative feedback

13
Q

What is reversible inhibition useful?

A

Important in controlling rate of metabolic pathways.
