What should you consider in inclusive design?

A

Anything that can be used, used to egress such as..

Ramps, Lifts, Corridors, Doors, Equipment Location/heights. Windows, Parking etc.

Refer to Approved Document M as a starting point.

What does the Equality Act 2010 cover?

A

It protects people from discrimination in the workplace and wider society (direct or indirect).

It protects characteristics including age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity.

Provides a framework for people with a defined characteristic against direct and indirect discrimination.

The act includes the former acts:
Sex Discrimination Act
Race Relations Act
Disability Discrimination Act 2005

What is the PSED?

A

Public Service Equality Duty.

Requires public bodies to have due regard to the need to:

  • Eliminate discrimination
  • Promote and advance equality

A

Volume 1 - Dwellings.

Volume 2 - Access and use other than dwellings.

What is an Access Statement?

A

Provides a statement to show how the access and usability issues are being addressed.

Usually submitted with planning applications as required.

The access statement is usually passed over in the Building Manual to the user to assist with access issues.
