A

Some members of the polish government fled the country and set up an exile government in Britain which were hostile to the USSR. The were non communist and called themselves the ‘London Poles’

What happened in 1943 with the London Poles?

A

They heard of the Soviet atrocities in Poland and they grew increasingly worried about Russian influence in their country.

What happened in 1944 in Poland?

A

Once the ‘London Poles’ fled Poland, the USSR set up its own communist style government. The people in its government were loyal to Stalin and they met at Lublin. They called themselves the ‘Lublin Poles’

When did the ‘London Poles’ attack and where?

A

They attacked German forces who occupied Warsaw (capital of Poland) in August 1944.

What happened in August 1944 when the ‘London Poles’ attacked?

A

The Soviet ‘Red Army’ was just outside of the city. However even though they were to defend Poland against Germans, they did not help the London Poles because they did not want them to take over the government of Poland. This was called the Warsaw uprising.

Who won in the Warsaw uprising?

A

The London Poles were easily crushed by Germans because the red army had stood by and done nothing. 300,000 polish soldiers were killed and sent to concentration camps.
