Q

What occurs above a mantle plume? X5

A
  1. Magma rises through the cracks and erupts to form volcanoes at the surface
  2. As the plates move over these hotspots the volcanoes are pushed away and new ones form in their place
  3. As the volcanoes move away they cool to produce islands
  4. This may result in a chain of islands
  5. May subside together with erosion and eventually sink beneath the waves

Q

Name one theory about infra-plate earthquakes

A
  • Ancient fault lines

- built up of stress is thought to deactivate the fault causing earthquakes

Q

Name another theory about intra-plate earthquakes

A
  • collision of tectonic plates may fracture the crust well away from the boundary
  • these fractures may produce large earthquakes over a long period of time
