1

What is "particle theory" ?

Using the arrangement of particles in solids liquids and gases to explain their properties

2

Which state of matter is shown?

A solid

3

Which state of matter is shown?

A gas

4

Which state of matter is shown?

A liquid

5

What happens during "Melting" ?

A solid turns into a liquid as the particles gain heat energy and vibrate more vigorously

6

What happens during "condensation" ?

A gas turns to a liquid as the particles lose heat energy and move less quickly

7

What happens during "Evaporation" ?

A liquid turns into a gas as the particles gain heat energy and move more quickly

8

What happens during "Freezing" ?

A liquid turns to a solid as the particles lose heat energy and move less quickly

9

What are the changes of state for water?

10

What is meant by "kinetic" energy?

How fast a particle is moving

11

What is temperature?

It is the avrage kinetic energy of the particles in a substance.

12

What is the unit of temperature?

º C

degrees Celsius

13

What is heat?

14

What is the unit of heat?

J  or kJ

Joules or kiloJoules

15

What are the 3 ways that heat can be transfered?

  • conduction
  • convection
  • radiation

16

Why do liquids at high temperatures "cool down"?

They lose heat to the surroundings

17

Why does the temperature of a small volume of water drop more quickly than a large volume?

The large volume has much more heat energy and it takes longer to transfer that to the surroundings

18

What is conduction?

The movement of heat through particles that are touching each other transferring energy as they vibrate more.

19

Why are metals such good conductors of heat?

20

What does density depend on?

21

Describe the relationship betwen density and whether a fluid will rise or fall

22

Which experiment shows convection currents in liquids?

23

Convection currents in liquids

24

Whys is freezer compartment at top of fridge?

25

Why is it windy at seaside?

26

How do gliders use thermals to fly?

27

What is thermal radiation?

The transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves. It doesn't involve particles

28

How does heat from sun reach Earth?

29

In which direction does thermal heat travel?

In all directions

360 degress from heat source
