A

It sets out relevant H&S legislation, including the H&S at Work Act 1974, and guidance of how to comply with this.

Who is in charge of ensuring Health & Safety at your company?

A

My company have a health & safety officer; however the Health & Safety at Work Act also gives me a duty of care to take reasonable care of my own health and safety and that of others around me. I ensure I cooperate with others regarding health and safety and follow training and procedures.

A

Identify hazards
Decide who might be harmed and how
Evaluation the risks and decide on precautions
Record your findings and implement them
Review your assessment and update when needed.

Before you visit a development site, what do you do?

A

If I am going alone I put it in my calendar and inform my colleagues where I am going and who I am meeting
I also take a mobile phone
I check the condition of the site, so I know what to expect
I check there will be suitable PPE gear provided, if not I ensure I take my own
When I arrive at site I sign in with the site manager and ensure I am briefed on any hazards on site and the evacuation procedures

What do you consider when going into an old building?

A

If the building was built before 1999 I would check the Asbestos Register to see if and where asbestos was present.

If your client wanted to refurbish or demolish a building where asbestos was present, what would you advise?

A

I would advise that in order to comply with the Control of Asbestos Regulations, they would be required to appoint a specialist to undertake a refurbishment or demolition survey to identify where asbestos is present and how this should be managed during the works.

How should H&S be managed on a construction site?

A

Under the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, there are various roles to ensure H&S on a construction site:
The Client – duty to ensure the project is suitable managed
Designer e.g. architects – duty to eliminate, reduce or control foreseeable risks which may arise during construction or in the use of the building once built
Principal designer – where one or more contractor is appointed on site a Principal Designer should be appointed to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate H&S during the pre-construction phase
Principal contractor – where one or more contractor is appointed on site a Principal Contractor should be appointed to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate H&S during the construction phase

A

The control of Asbestos Regulation 2012

  • Brown (amosite) banded in 1985
  • Blue (crocidolite) banned in 1985
  • White (chrysotile) illegal in 1999
  • Management survey – to locate and assess asbestos and advise on its management
  • Demolition survey – samples of expected surveys are analysed

What are the elements of the H&S 1974 act

A

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA) lays down wide-ranging duties on employers. Employers must protect the ‘health, safety and welfare’ at work of all their employees, as well as others on their premises, including temps, casual workers, the self-employed, clients, visitors and the general public.
