Q

What is the definition of HAZMAT?

A

Any material that, because of the quantity, concentration or physical or chemical characteristics, may pose a substantial hazard o human health or the enviroment when purposefully released or accidentally spilled.

2
Q

What is the definition of HAZWASTE?

A

Once HAZMAT has been used the discarded material (liquid, solid, or gas which meets the definition of HAZMAT is designated as hazardous waste.

3
Q

True or False - It is not everyone’s job to ensure the proper disposal and/or storage of HAZMAT/HAZWASTE to minimize personal and enviromental impact?

A

FALSE

4
Q

What is important about HAZMAT storage and inspection?

A

Stowage locations shall be inspected weekly and quarterly; the inspections should consist of tightness of closure, corrosion, leakage, improper or inadequate labeling, and shelf life.

5
Q

What does (MSDS) stand for?

A

Material Safety Data Sheet

6
Q

What are the six categories of HAZMAT?

A
  1. Flammable or combustible materials
  2. Aerosol containers
  3. Toxic Materials
  4. Corrosive materials (including acids and bases)
  5. Oxidizing materials
  6. Compressed Gases
7
Q

What is secondary labeling of HAZMAT?

A

When removed from the original container it is essential to identifying what is inside of a container.

8
Q

Why would we need secondary labeling for HAZMAT?

A

Because many HAZMAT items are issued in bulk, so use of a more manageable secondary container is essential.

9
Q

True or False - You can use any container available to store HAZMAT?

A

False - Use only approved containers; ensure that existing precautionary labeling is retained and that subsequent containers are marked with appropriate precautionary labeling.

10
Q

What is the HAZMAT (AUL)?

A

Authorized Use List - A current inventory of HAZMAT, chemical substances, or components known or suspected to contain HAZMAT used for local acquisition and use. Local workcenters or codes should maintain a current inventory of items authorized for local use and keep it current.

11
Q

What should the HAZMAT training for all hands include?

A
  1. Types of HAZMAT in their work area and aboard ship 2. What HAZWASTE is and how to dispose of it
  2. How to read and interpret hazard warning labels
  3. What an MSDS is, how to read it, and where a copy is available to review
  4. Protective measures when handling HAZMAT
  5. Emergency procedures
12
Q

What is the process for disposing of Hazardous waste disposal?

A

When disposing of adhesives, grease, hydraulic fluid, paint/paint thinners, fuels and and waste oils all personnel must ensure they comply with local ship/station procedures for disposal of HAZWASTE and HAZWASTE contaminated times.

13
Q

What does (PMS) stand for?

A

Planned Maintenance System

14
Q

What is the (PMS) program?

A

Disposal methods shall be followed during performance of PMS, HAZWASTE is disposed of based on category of HAZWASTE, some of these methods are, containers (HAZWASTE specific), double plastic bagged, and drums. For flammables the containers must be fire safe in nature, NEVER place flammables HW into the ships incinerator.

15
Q

True or False Containerize spent or spilled hydraulic fluids in approved containers for proper shore disposal.

A

TRUE

16
Q

True or False You can mix collected petroleum fluids synthetic fluids.

A

FALSE

17
Q

What PPE should be used when handling HAZMAT/HAZWASTE?

A

All personnel must read the MSDS for that HAZMAT, general PPE includes eye protection, respiratory devices and gloves.

18
Q

What are the general steps of response to a HAZMAT spill?

A
  1. Discovery
  2. Notification
  3. Initiation of action
  4. Evaluation
  5. Containment
  6. Damage control
  7. Dispersion of Gases/vapors
  8. Cleanup and decontamination
  9. Disposal
  10. Certification for re-entry
  11. Follow-up reports
19
Q

What is the purpose of the MSDS?

A

MSDS’s are technical bulletins containing information about materials, such as composition, chemical and physical characteristics, health, and safety hazards and precautions for safe handling.
