What is Tuberculosis (TB) ?

A

TB is a highly contagious, chronic bacterial infection of human tissues and organs, especially the lungs.

What are the causes of Tuberculosis (TB) ?

A

TB is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

What are the symptoms of Tuberculosis?

A
Persistent cough
tiredness and fatigue 
weight loss
night sweats 
chest pain
blood in mucus coughed up

How is Tuberculosis transmitted?

A

Bacteria are released into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, shouts or spits. The bacteria in the infected droplets spread through the air and can be inhaled by a healthy person

What are the treatments for Tuberculosis?

A

TB can be treated and successfully cured with early and correct diagnosis.
TB is treated with an aggressive course of antibiotics; the full course must be completed.
Treatment lasts about 6 months.

what diseases can be caused by smoking?

A

Cigarette smoking causes a variety of diseases: lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis

What are three harmful toxins found in cigarettes ?

A

Nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide

How do the harmful toxins in cigarettes effect the body?

A

These toxins cause hardening of the arterial walls (atherosclerosis)

What do the harmful toxins do to the body?

A

It stimulates the secretion of adrenaline, which leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease and stroke

A

No person may smoke in any public place; and no closer than 10 metres from a door or window that leads to a public place
