Q

17
Q

what are the 6 defence mechanisms

A
repression
denial
projection
displacement
regression
sublimation
18
Q

what is repression

A

keep disturbing thoughts from becoming conscious

19
Q

what s denial

A

blocking external events from awareness

20
Q

what is projection

A

individuals attributing their own unacceptable thoughts onto another person

21
Q

what is displacement

A

satisfying an impulse with a substitute object

22
Q

what is regression

A

movement back in psychological time when one is faced with stress

23
Q

what is sublimation

A

satisfying an impulse with a socially acceptable object e.g. sport

24
Q

criminal behaviour

weak superego

A

superego is moral regulator of behaviour.
It punishes the ego with anxiety when an immoral act is contemplated and with guilt.
A weak superego would result in few of the inhibitions against antisocial behaviour

25
Q

criminal behaviour

deviant superego

A

superego has deviant values and punishes those behaviours the same-sex parent would find unacceptable.
A son raised in a family where the father is a criminal, the superego wouldn’t react to criminal acts that the father would engage in

26
Q

criminal behaviour

strong superego

A

a strong superego can prevent the person from expressing any of the antisocial impulses that build up in their unconscious. They would normally express these impulses harmlessly through defence mechanisms. If the super ego prevents this from happening aggression could build up over time and become strong enough to overwhelm the ego and express violence.

27
Q

what are the 3 negatives of this theory

A

untestable
cultural bias
poor explanation for personality

28
Q

Negs
