Interoception and Nociception

A

Interoception is the sense of the internal state of the body; the brain’s process of integrating signals relayed from the body into its
specific subregions. Nociception refers to the perception or sensation of pain

Pain perception vs. Pain behavior

A

Noticing a sensation and labeling it as pain (pain perception) is a different process/phenomenon than the manner in which an
individual takes action with regard to the sensation (pain behavior). Both processes are influenced by various, differing factors

Private pain signifies how one experiences and deals with pain intrapersonally; public pain refers to displaying, expressing that pain
interpersonally

but are culturally determined as well

A

A social group or culture’s informal norms that distinguish how one should express themselves. They can be described as culturally
prescribed rules that people learn early on in their lives via interactions and socialization. That is, when, where, and how one is
allowed to express certain emotions

A

The manner in which a certain emotion manifests in a social group or culture. The representation can be visual, verbal, gestural, and
have cultural and personal manifestations

Hypercognized emotions vs. Hypocognized emotions

A

Hypercognized emotions are emphasized and discussed in a social group or culture; they usually have a rich vocabulary that reflects
a fine-tuned perception of the emotion and its manifestations. Hypocognized emotions are avoided, not discussed in a social group
or culture; there is usually a sparse vocabulary concerning the emotion and its subjective experience

Expectancy

A

The state of thinking or hoping that something will happen; presuming a certain outcome in a situation. The motivation of behavior
selection is determined by the presumption of the outcome

Somatization vs. Psychologization

A

Somatization is emphasizing the aspects of the illness experience with the terminology of somatic sensations or translating a mental
problem into somatic terms (e.g.: expressing workplace stress as “muscle aches”). Psychologization is emphasizing the psychosocial
aspects of illness causation or the illness experience (e.g.: attributing stress as the cause of cancer)

Sacred archetype

A

Every organized religion has forces, heroes, characters and occurrences in its sacred texts with which, with whom the adherents of
the religion aim to identify with and imitate. These characters are called sacred archetypes and imitating them (in rituals) enables an
adherent to gain personal experience with their religious tenets, thus strengthening their faith

Purification vs. Profanization

A

For the religious person the world is divided into sacred and profane spaces and acts. The religious individual aims to be in the
sacred but feels they are often forced into the profane through everyday life and activities. Through rituals of purification they feel
they are “cleansed”; pain can be a vehicle of purification in many religions. All this may relate to “spiritual practices” as well
