Q

What is high ex foam used for?

A

High ex foams are intended to fight fires of class “A” combustible materials in areas that are inaccessible to firefighters such as cellars and ship holds . High ex is not suitable for use an outdoor flammable liquid fires.
Note: 1 inch yellow band around the throat of the eductor is for high ex

Q

Can any foams be mixed together for storage?

A

No
However , at an incident, 2 different types of low ex can be used simultaneously if quantity is insufficient
Hi ex foam is NOT to be mixed with lo ex foam

Q

AFFF is a synthetic foam, what is its downside?

A

Knockdown will be observed BUT the the film produced might be unstable because its not aerated . Breakdown around hot metal, especially pipes in boiler rooms should be anticipated

Q

Finished ff foams are designed to be lighter than the fuels they are placed on and thus float on the surface of the fuel. This results in 4 primary methods of extinguishment. What are they?

A

Smothering, suppressing, separates, cools

Q

________ is the superior fire extinguishing concentrate for both hydrocarbon fuels (gasoline, fuel oils, etc.) as well as polar solvents (alcohols, ketones, etc.) It is used at 3 % rate for hydrocarbons and 6 % rate for polar solvents.

A

Fluoropolydol

Note: fluoroprotein is NOT suitable for polar solvent fuels, nor is it effective on pure MTBE

Q

Foam hand lines are very useful at small ops. Give examples

A
  • oil burner with fire outside the pit
  • gas pumped knocked over
  • car fire with ruptured gas tank
  • a small spill ( approx 600 sq feet ) or similar situation

Q

When would master streams be used for foam ops ?

A

Used at the largest type ops such as oil tank farms, large spills over 2,000 sq feet, or a large capacity tank truck that has spilled it’s product.

Q

Eliminate all sources of ignition. Would you start upwind or downwind ?
- who takes explosive readings ?

A

Start with downwind and down hill.

- rescue, squad, haz mat 1

16
Q

Fire in confined area ie tanks, pits

If there is sufficient freeboard on the interior of a tank, direct the stream where ?

A

Against the side or back of the burning area . The velocity of the streak will be broken and foam will fall gently over the surface

17
Q

If tank is filled to top, personnel will have to remove product from the bottom and insure the product line is within ____ feet of top

A

5

18
Q

If the top of the container is close to the ground, and there is LITTLE or NO freeboard inside the tank , the stream should be directed where?

A

At the ground in front of the tank in such a manner as to bounce the foam onto the burning surface

19
Q

If a tank truck is on fire, it is extremely important to get a large caliber stream in action to quickly cool the ?

A

VAPOR area of the truck

20
Q

What is the band color for HI Ex foam 5 gallon containers?

A

Yellow

21
Q

3.6.3 true or false. 2008 cp test
Dry chem must be used to extinguish a three-dimensional fire when the burning fuel is dropping down Apply the dry chem in combination with the foam stream so that any disruption is immediately recovered The dry chem is discharged into the foam stream.

A

True
