What is high ex foam used for?
High ex foams are intended to fight fires of class “A” combustible materials in areas that are inaccessible to firefighters such as cellars and ship holds . High ex is not suitable for use an outdoor flammable liquid fires.
Note: 1 inch yellow band around the throat of the eductor is for high ex
What is low ex foam used for?
Low expansion foams are extremely useful on fires and spills involving flammable and combustible liquids.
What are the low ex foams that the fdny currently use?
- fluoroprotein
- fluoropolydol
- AFFF
Can any foams be mixed together for storage?
No
However , at an incident, 2 different types of low ex can be used simultaneously if quantity is insufficient
Hi ex foam is NOT to be mixed with lo ex foam
AFFF is a synthetic foam, what is its downside?
Knockdown will be observed BUT the the film produced might be unstable because its not aerated . Breakdown around hot metal, especially pipes in boiler rooms should be anticipated
Finished ff foams are designed to be lighter than the fuels they are placed on and thus float on the surface of the fuel. This results in 4 primary methods of extinguishment. What are they?
Smothering, suppressing, separates, cools
________ is the superior fire extinguishing concentrate for both hydrocarbon fuels (gasoline, fuel oils,etc.) as well as polar solvents (alcohols,ketones, etc.) It is used at 3 % rate for hydrocarbons and 6 % rate for polar solvents.
Fluoropolydol
Note: fluoroprotein is NOT suitable for polar solvent fuels, nor is it effective on pure MTBE

Medium sized flammable / combustible liquid situation such as a spill over 600 square feet , a tanker truck mishap, a loading rack incident or similar situation.
When would master streams be used for foam ops ?
Used at the largest type ops such as oil tank farms, large spills over 2,000 sq feet, or a large capacity tank truck that has spilled it’s product.
