1
Q

% of water loss through eating

A

20%

2
Q

% of water intake through drinking

A

80%

3
Q

% of water intake through metabolism of food

A

10%

4
Q

Insensible losses of water

A

Respiration

Sweating

5
Q

Abnormal losses

A

Vomit & diarrhoea

6
Q

What % of total body weight is water

A

60%

7
Q

What % of water in the body is extracellular

A

20%

8
Q

% of intercellular water

A

40%

9
Q

% of interstitial fluid

A

15%

10
Q

% of intavascular water

A

5%

11
Q

Causes for primary causes of water depletion

A
Lack of water supply
Unable to drink
Excessive panting
Pyrexia/fever
Diabetes insipidus
12
Q

Causes for mixed water depletion

A
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Third spaced fluid loss
Burns
Wounds
13
Q

Considerations of fluid therapy

A

Route of fluid therapy
Choice of vein
Choice of fluid e.g. blood products, colloids, crystaloids
Choice of giving set

14
Q

What is shock

A

State of acute circulatory collapse where the circulation is unable to transport sufficient oxygen to meet the tissues

15
Q

Types of shock

A

Hypovolaemic
Obstructive
Cardiogenic
Distributive (SIRS/anaphylactic)

16
Q

Hypovolaemic shock

A

Due to loss of circulating blood volume causing decrease in tissue perfusion

17
Q

Causes of hypovolaemic shock

A
Haemorrhagic
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Severe dehydration
Neoplasia
Burns
Polyuria
18
Q

Obstructive shock

A

Rare
Obstruction of blood flow from heart or venous return to the heart
Must occur in a vessel close to heart to cause deficit in tissue ivy Ben delivery

19
Q

Causes of obstructive shock

A

Pulmonary thromboembolism

Pericardial effusion - increased intrapericardial pressure reduces blood flow to right side of heart
