GPWS Terrain/obstacle warning

At night or in instrument conditions:

  • [PF] Call “Max thrust, stow speed brakes.”
  • [PF] Disconnect autopilot and autothrottles.
  • [PF] Apply maximum thrust. Move thrust levers aggressively to forward stops.
  • [PF]Simultaneously roll wings level and rotate to an initial pitch attitude of 20°. Do not follow flight director commands.
  • [PF, PM] Retract speed brakes.
  • [PM] Verify all required actions have been completed. Call out any omissions.
  • [PF] Maintain configuration. Do not change flap, gear, or trim position until terrain separation is assured. Only vertical maneuvers are recommended unless the pilot determines, based on all available information, that turning in addition to the vertical escape maneuver is the safest course of action.
  • [PF, PM] Monitor for sustained or increasing terrain separation. Monitor vertical speed and altitude (radio altitude for terrain clearance and barometric altitude for a minimum safe altitude). PMcalls out any trend toward terrain contact.
  • [PF] When clear of terrain, slowly decrease pitch attitude and accelerate.

TCAS “RA”

A

WARNING: A“descend” (fly down) RA issued below 1000 feet AGL should not be followed.

For a CLIMB RA in a landing configuration:

  • [PF] Disengage autopilot and autothrottles.
  • [PF] Accomplish a normal go-around using maximum thrust.
  • [PM] Verify maximum thrust is selected while accomplishing normal PM go-around duties.
  • [PF, PM] Visually acquire intruder, if able. For all other RAs:
  • [PF] Disengage autopilot and autothrottles.
  • [PF] Adjust pitch attitude. Establish or maintain a pitch outside of all RPAAs. Adjust thrust manually to keep airspeed in an acceptable range. Maintain pitch attitude that complies with the RA (outside all RPAAs) and deviates least from ATC clearance.
  • [PF, PM] Visually acquire intruder, if able.
  • [PM] Advise ATC. Use the phraseology, “TCAS RA.”
  • [PF, PM] Maintain a pitch attitude clear of RPAAs. If needed, strengthened RA guidance (e.g., “Climb, climb now”) will be issued if the miss distance does not increase after the initial RA. When “Clear of conflict” message is heard:
  • [PF] Return aircraft flight path to ATC clearance. PM notifies ATC of the return to clearance if a TCAS RA or TCAS descent was initially reported.
  • [PF] Set autopilot and autothrottles as desired.
