Q

How many detectors in the engines must sense a fire or overheat to produce an alert?

A

Normally, at least one element on each channel.

1
Q

How many fire detection loops does each engine have?

A

2 loops per engine.

2
Q

If a fault is detected in one loop, will a fire or overheat still be detected?

A

Yes, remaining channel automatically switches to single channel operation. Fire detection is still available.

3
Q

What does an EICAS message “DET FIRE ENG L/R” indicate?

A

Both detector channels on one engine has failed. Fire detection system has failed.

4
Q

What are the indications of a left engine fire?

A
  • Fire bell
  • Master warning light
  • EICAS “FIRE ENG L”
  • Engine fire switch LEFT fire warning light
  • Engine fuel control switch LEFT fire warning light
  • Engine fire switch LEFT unlocks
5
Q

What are the indications of a left engine overheat?

A
  • Caution beeper sounds
  • Master caution light
  • EICAS “OVERHEAT ENG L”
6
Q

In flight, what conditions will unlock an engine fire switch?

A

A fire warning or FUEL CONTROL switch in cutoff on the related engine.

7
Q

How many fire extinguisher bottles does each engine have?

A

Two bottles in total for both engines.

8
Q

What indications are given if the engine fire bottle is discharged or has low pressure?

A
  • ENG BTL DISCH light illuminates (1 or 2)

- EICAS “BTL 1/2 DISCH ENG”

9
Q

Will the APU shut down automatically for a fire on the ground with both engines shut down?

A

Yes

10
Q

Is there a difference to the fire protection system on the APU when on the ground with both engines shut down and APU running?

A

Yes, a signal from a single loop is sufficient to automatically shut down the APU and discharge the bottle.

11
Q

Where is the APU ground control fire protection panel located?

A

On the nose gear

12
Q

Which areas are covered by the wheel well fire protection systems?

A

Only the main gear well

13
Q

What does the wheel well fire protection consist of?

A

Dual channel detectors for overheat and fire in the main gear wheel well.

14
Q

What are the indications of a cargo fire?

A
  • Fire bell
  • Master warning light
  • EICAS “FIRE CARGO FWD/AFT”
  • CARGO FIRE light (FWD or AFT)
15
Q

How many cargo compartment fire extinguisher bottles are there?

A

Total of 6 bottles

16
Q

How is cargo fire extinguishing initiated?

A

Automatically upon sensing a fire warning.

Can also be manually initiated by pushing CARGO FIRE DISCHARGE switch.

17
Q

How many cargo fire extinguisher bottles are fired first and how is this indicated?

A

Two bottles discharged immediately.

  • CARGO FIRE DISCHARGE light illuminates
  • EICAS “BOTTLE DISCH CARGO”
18
Q

When do the remaining cargo fire extinguisher bottles discharge in the air? Is this always the case?

A

After a 15 minute delay, remaining 4 bottles discharge at a reduced rate. If landing is made within the 15 minutes, one of the remaining bottles discharges on touchdown.

19
Q

What is the effect when a “CARGO FIRE ARM” switch is selected to ARM?

A
  • Arms all cargo fire extinguisher bottles
  • Arms the selected compartment extinguisher valve
  • Turns off lower recirculation fans
  • Shuts down cargo heat
  • Commands the packs to minimum flow
  • Shuts down bulk cargo ventilation system (AFT fire only)
  • Shuts down the lavatory/galley vent fan (AFT fire only)
  • Associated equipment cooling system into override mode
  • Turns off miscellaneous equip. cooling fan (FWD fire only)
  • Shuts of IFE cooling
  • Turns off NGS
  • Turns off door 4 galley chiller units (AFT fire)
  • Outflow valves move to 50/50 flow split
  • Turns off zonal dryer fans
20
Q

What happens when the engine fire switch is pulled out?

A
  • Closes engine fuel valve and spar fuel valve
  • Shuts off hydraulic fluid to the EDP
  • Depressurizes the EDP
  • Arms both extinguishers
  • Closes the engine anti-ice valves
  • Trips the generator off
  • Removes power to the thrust reverser isolation valve
21
Q

How many fire detection loops are there for the APU?

A

Two loops

22
Q

How long is the delay after APU fire automatic shutdown in flight until the bottle discharges? Why?

A

15 seconds.

Allows time for the APU fuel valve to shut.

23
Q

Which cargo compartments, if any, have smoke detection?

A

All cargo compartments.

24
Q

What is the effect of pushing a CARGO FIRE DISCH switch while on the ground?

A

Three bottles discharge simultaneously into selected compartment, with third bottle at reduced rate.

25
Q

What fire protection does the main wheel well have?

A

Fire and overheat detection only, no extinguishing.

26
Q

How many smoke detection zones exist in each cargo compartment?

A

Three.
Detectors:
787-8 14/6/2
787-9 18/9/2

27
Q

How many detection zones must detect smoke in a cargo compartment to initiate a fire warning?

A

Smoke in one zone is sufficient to generate a warning. Normally two detectors in compartment must detect smoke or overheat to cause a fire warning.
