When they passed those tests, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham and Sarai’s to Sarah. Then Sarah had a son named Isaac. When Isaac was a boy, God told Abraham to go up on a mountain and sacrifice Isaac. When Abraham agreed, God told him that that was the final test of faith and that he didnt have to sacrifice Issaac.

A

When Isaac grew up, he had twin sons named Jacob and Esau. God made it clear that Jacob should have birthright, but Esau was older. Jacob tricked Esau into selling him his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew. Jacob then tricked his blind father into giving him the blessing that should have been given to Esau. Esau vowed to kill Jacob. So Jacob fled his home. God came to Jacob in a dream and told him that he was with him and changed his name to Israel. Jacob prospered and had many children.

A

Joseph’s father and brothers were still living in Canaan, and there was a famine there. Joseph asked the pharaoh for permission to let his father and brothers move to Egypt. The pharaoh agreed to let them live there.

A

When Moses grew up, he saw an Israelite slave being beaten by an Egyptian, and Moses killed the Egyptian. The pharaoh heard about this, so Moses had to run away to Midian. While there, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush. God told that he was to lead the Israelites out of slavery.

A

Moses returned to Egypt and explained this message to the Israelites. Moses and his brother Aaron met with the pharaoh and tried to negotiate freedom. The pharaoh refused. Moses asked God what to do, so God told Moses that he would bring “great acts of judgement” on the Egyptians, which were the plagues.

A

God instructed the Israelites to mark their doorframes with lamb’s blood. At midnight, God sent an angel of death all over Egypt, killing the firstborn child of every Egyptian and sparing the Israelites. Horrified, the pharaoh told Moses to take the Israelites and leave immediatley.

A

The pharaoh changed his mind and sent an army after the Israelites. They were pursued to the Red Sea, where they could not go any farther. God parted the Red Sea, and the Israelites were able to walk through. When the Egyptian army tried to pursue, the sea returned to normal and the Egyptians drowned. The Israelites had escaped from Egypt.

A

They faced a long journey through the Sinai peninsula. God gave them manna and water, and led the way with a pillar of fire. When the Israelites got to Mount Sinai, Moses went up to the mountain to pray to God. God gave Moses the 10 Commandments, and a covenant that they would follow those commandments.

A

They had built a false god of a golden calf, and began to worship it. When Moses came down from the mountain and saw this, he became very angry. The Israelites began to realize that God was with them, so they took apart the golden calf and built the ark of the covenant.

Forty years. Moses died before they could reach the Promised land, so God appointed Joshua to lead them into the Promised land.

A

There were Canaanites living there, and the Israelites had to conquer the largest city of Jericho. God told Joshua to march around the walls of the city and make a lot of noise. After 7 days, the walls of Jericho fell down, and the Israelites took over Jericho.

A

The Israelites would start worshipping false gods, so God would allow other tribes to take over Canaan. The Israelites would realize their mistake and ask God for help. God would send a judge (military leader) to help the people. The judge would defeat the enemy, and the pattern would start over.

A

He was another Nazirite judge. He was blessed by God with great strength. Samson married a Philistine woman named Delilah, who told the Philistine leaders of the secret to his strength. Delilah cut off his hair when he was asleep, and the Philistines imprisoned him. While in prison, Samson’s strength came back. He used this strength to pull down the temple he was tied up in, killing himself and everyone in it.

A

A woman named Naomi moved to Moab with her husband and sons. One of her sons married Ruth. Soon after, both sons and their father died. Ruth refused to leave Naomi, moving back to Canaan with her. During the harvest, Ruth was given extra grain by a farmer named Boaz. Soon after Boaz bought some land from Naomi and married Ruth.

A

Samuel was God ‘s first prophet. There was a lot of fighting, and the Philistines were threatening Israel. Samuel gradually became their leader, but the people wanted a king.

A

Two women came to Solomon, each claming to be the mother of a baby. To test the women, Solomon told the soldier to cut the baby in half and give one half to each woman. When the women heard this, one of them begged Solomon not to kill the baby and to give it to the other woman. Solomon knew that this was the true mother of the baby, and gave it to her.

A

A

A

He renamed it to Judea, put to death those who challenged his authority, and imposed heavy taxes to please the Romans. He was loved by the Romans and hated by the Jews.
