The tabernacle was the portable tent of meeting or worship used by Israel in the wilderness and even later. It represented the tabernacling presence of God with his people.
The ark of the covenant was a portable chest which contained the copy of the covenant and other sacred objects; portable throne of God

What was the nature and meaning of the sacrificial system within ancient Israel?

A

The sacrificial system was at the heart of Israel’s worship. Sacrifice has a threefold meaning:

  1. a communion offering, which bound God and people together.
  2. a gift presented to God, which expressed thanksgiving and sought God’s favor
  3. Release of vital power, inherent in the offering of the life of the animal to God

A

burnt-whole animal;expresses praise and adoration. No direct relation to sin

peace-parts of the animal only; a praise offering with communion fellowship meal, expressing joy and gratitude. The best loved of the sacrifices.

sin-atonement for inadvertent or “unwitting” sins; did not address deliberate or “high-handed” sins. Focused upon the blood, the whole animal is destroyed.

trespass/guilt-restitution, where damage is done to another party. Same ritual as the burnt offering, with only inedible parts burned on the altar. Rest of the meat given to the priests.
