The sacrificial system was at the heart of Israel’s worship. Sacrifice has a threefold meaning:

1. a communion offering, which bound God and people together.
2. a gift presented to God, which expressed thanksgiving and sought God’s favor
3. Release of vital power, inherent in the offering of the life of the animal to God

An amphictyony is a loose grouping of confederated tribes around a central worship place. Initially, Israel seems to have been a loose grouping of tribes which met annually at Shechem to renew the covenant.
