What do fats provide in our food? why are they used?

A

They provide energy, protection, taste and vitamins.

What are the functions of fats in our foods?

A

Frying things e.g. chips, enriching e.g. sauces, emulsifying e.g. mayonnaise, moistening e.g.butter, colouring e.g.butter in pastry and creaming e.g.cakes

Where are saturated fats found?

A

They come from animal sources and some vegetable sources such as palm and coconut oil.

Why are saturated fats bad?

A

They can increase blood cholesterol which can lead to heart disease and other heart problems, diabetes etc.

A

Polyunsaturated

A

In sunflower oil, rapeseed and soya.

What are the functions of fat in the body?

A

1.Provide us with a source of energy, 2.surrounds and protects our vital organs and skeleton. 3. forms an insulating layer to help preserve body heat. 4.Forms part of the cell membranes in the body espeically in the brain. 5.Provides fat soluble vitamins - A, D, E, K.

What are the effects of excess of fat consumption?

A

Obesity, Diabetes, Bad cholesterol, High blood pressure, Heart attack

What are trans fats?

A

They are rare in nature, found in small amounts in milk, cheese, beef and lamb. Also produced during manufacturing of some table margarine and solid spreads used in baked products such as pies, cakes buns and pastries.

What are the deficiency effects of fat consumption?

A

Achy or popping joints as fatty acids are needed to lubricate body joints. Difficulty in concentrating and remembering as fatty acids are essential for brain functioning. Fatigued and unmotivated.

Where is omega 3 found?

A

In fish, fish oil, all green leafy vegetables, flax seed, hemp and walnuts.
