Function of the lacrimal apparatus

Lacrimal Apparatus

  • Function: Secretes tears for lubricating & antibacterial properties

2

The lacrimal apparatus for each eye consists of?

  1. Lacrimal glands
  2. Lacrimal canals
  3. Lacrimal sac
  4. Nasolacrimal duct

3

What is the names and function of this structure of the lacrimal appartus?

Lacrimal glands

  • Function: Are paried glands that secrete the aqeusous layer of the tear film
    • Tears contain mucus antibodies, and lysozyme
  • Lacrimal glands are divided into two portions
    • A larger orbital portion
    • A smaller palperbreal portion (if the upper eyelid is everted; the palperbal portion can be seen)

4

What is the names and function of this structure of the lacrimal appartus?

Lacrimal Sac

  • Function: the upper dilated end of the nasolacrimal duct

5

What is the names and function of this structure of the lacrimal appartus?

Lacrimal Canals

  • Function: canals that excess tears drain into
    • Tears then travel from the lacrimal canals to the lacrimal sac

6

What is the names and function of this structure of the lacrimal appartus?

Nasolacrimal duct

  • Function: carries tears from the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity
    • •Excess tears flow through the nasolacrimal duct which opens in the nose.

•This is the reason the nose starts to run when a person is crying.

7

Another name for eyelids

Palpebrae

8

Function of the palpebrae?

  • Control the amount of light and debris entering the eye
  • Spread moisture by blinking

9

THe anterior surface of the eye is protected by __________.

The eyelids (palpebrae)
