The Overall responsibilities of O/C Exhibits:
Receive Exhibit
Ensure it is labelled by finder and accompanied by exhibit schedule
Ensure exhibit is uniquely numbered
Record exhibit in exhibit register
Record all exhibit movement
Securing the exhibits
Consult 2IC on relevance and if further enquires are needed
Deliver exhibits for examination or analysis
Prepare exhibit for production in court
Ensure continuity of evidence is maintained
Produce exhibits in court
Exhibit Numbering System attributes

- be consistent
- allow delegation of exhibit numbers to the staff who will be using them
- cope with multiple scenes
- be compatible with technology, allowing searching to be conducted using exhibit numbers
- encompass all exhibits, MEK’s, blood swabs photographs

If the exhibit is wet
Ensure prompt action to preserve the action. Air dry exhibits ensuring not to cross contaminate.
Splitting an exhibit
An exhibit found within another exhibit should be assigned sequential exhibit numbers following the original exhibit. Don’t use points or slashes.
Role of OC Exhibits
The O/C Exhibits is responsible for the custody and security of all exhibits. They are also responsible for establishing and maintaining all exhibit systems.
Before Accepting/receiving Exhibits, ensure the person who seized it has
Preserved correctly
Packaged, labelled and sealed correctly in accordance with SOP
Unique exhibit number assigned from the allocated range
Labelled with exhibit number and name of operation
Recorded correctly on exhibits schedule
Dealing with exhibits
Do not touch or move it Advise O/C scene consider its Significance Photograph in situ Consider fingerprints Mark the position where it was found Measure position from a fixed point Plot the position on a sketch plan
