Excretory System Flashcards

1
Q

Excretion

A

Removal of the wastes of metabolism from the body
Importance: most wastes are toxic and harmful to one’s health if allowed to accumulate. Removing wastes before the reach harmful concentrations is important

Q

Urinary system functions

A
  • Kidneys: filters blood, removes waste
  • Aorta: carry blood, high in waste
  • Inferior vena cava: return from kidney, low in waste
  • Ureter: transports urine
  • Bladder: stores urine
  • Urethra: releases urine (carries from bladder)

Q

Ammonia and urea

A
  • Ammonia is extremely toxic to the body, must therefore be converted to the less toxic substance urea
  • Urea can then be excreted in the kidneys and in small amounts through sweat, nails and hair
