Stratum Corneum,Stratum Lucidum,Stratum Granulosum, Stratum Spinosum, Stratum Basale
What are keratinocytes?
Most common cells of the skin, form in the stratum basale, tightly connected by desmosomes
What is keratin?
a protein
How do skin cells age?
Older skin cells get pushed to the surface
What is thick skin?
Has thicker layers, found in the palms, fingertips, and soles of the feet
What is thin skin?
has NO stratum lucidum; covers the rest of the body
What are melanocytes?
cells that give color
What is melanin?
a pigment that is widespread in living things
What are freckles and moles?
Local accumulations of melanin
What are the layers of the dermis?
Papillary and Reticular layer
What are eccrine sweat glands?
Found over most of the body; Functions in thermoregulation
What are apocrine glands?
Confined to axillary and anogenital areas; start functioning at puberty
What are the functions of sebaceous glands?
Produce an oily/waxy secretion, bactericidal, softens hair and skin
