1
Q

What has this model lead to the development of?

A

Other , newer more sophisticated models

2
Q

5 bits of supporting evidence?

A
  • Sperling showed support for the capacity and duration of the sensory memory
  • Miller showing support for the limited capacity in the STM
  • Peterson and Peterson supporting the duration In the LTM
  • Glanzer and Cunitz supporting the separate LTM and STM
  • Clive wearing showing the existence of different memory stores
3
Q

What did sperling discover?

A

That we can access more than 9 bits of info in the sensory memory if we access them quickly enough but if we leave them more than 1 second the access fades away

4
Q

What did Miller discover?

A

the STM can only hold between 5 and 9 bits of info before overloading resulting in info being displaced

5
Q

What did Peterson and Peterson discover?

A

The STM has a limited time span of around 20 seconds and without rehearsal the info would soon fade

6
Q

What did Glanzer and Cunitz discover?

A

Found more people recalled words from the beginning and the end of a list of words , Suggesting earlier words were in the LTM and Later words were still in the STM

7
Q

What happened in Clive wearing?

A

He contracted a form of herpes which damaged his hippocampus and his short term memory had remained in tact but he could not transfer memory from the STM to the LTM

8
Q

Why do most cognitive psychologists now dislike the model?

A

They argue it is very limited and simplistic

9
Q

Refuting evidence?

A
  • Levels of processing
  • Warington and Shallice case study of K.F
  • Clive wearing
10
Q

Why does levels of processing refute this model?

A

It demonstrates that info is not transferred to the LTM simply by rehearsal but instead a more sophisticated processing.

11
Q

What cant the model clearly explain?

A

Why we remember highly emotional events

12
Q

What happened in Warington and Shallice’s case study of K.F?

A

-despite a damaged STM caused by a motorcycle accident K.F was still able to form new LTM’s showing there must be other ways to access the LTM other than what this model suggests

13
Q

Why does Clive Wearing refute this model?

A

Clive was able to improve on various skill based tasks such as playing the piano so their must be more than one type of LTM store as he couldn’t remember most other LT memory’s

14
Q

What is the negative of having much experimental support as this model does?

A

Experiments lack ecological validity as they are all very artificial often using word lists which is not a good indication on how we learn things in everyday life.
