What is race?

A

Perceived biological or physical differences between groups eg skin colour

What is ethnicity?

A

Cultural differences between groups based on things such as religion, language, country of origin, customs, norms, values, food, dress, music

What is an ethnic minority group?

A

Group who share the same cultural background but which is different to that of the majority culture where they reside

What is nationality?

A

Refers to your country of origin or where you’re legally entitled to reside eg citizenship

What is an immigrant?

A

Someone who has moved from one country to permanently reside in another

What are 1st/2nd/3rd generation immigrants?

A

1st: Moved themselves and hold onto their culture
2nd: their children who hold onto some but also adapt to a different culture
3rd: their grandchildren who take on a new culture

What is an asylum seeker?

A

Someone who seeks refuge in another country for a temporary period if it is too dangerous for them to be in their own country eg war/ natural disasters

What is an illegal immigrant?

A

Someone who is not legally entitled to live in a country eg. Entered illegally/outstayed their visa

What are the two types of racism?

A

Prejudice: prejudging someone on their ethnicity before you know them and is based on stereotypes

Discrimination: Acting on prejudices

What is institutional racism?

A

When the way an organisation operates to be racist and is usually unconsciously discriminating eg curriculum, islamophobia in the media, Black people are 7x more likely to be stopped by the police

What is assimilation?

A

When an ethnic minority group becomes absorbed into the ethnic majority and adopt their cultural norms and values

A

When ethnic minorities become part of the majority culture

What is cultural resistance?

A

When an ethnic minority group unite together and strengthen their own ethnic identities as a way of fighting the racism they face from the ethnic majority

A

The way in which some ethnic groups behave differently with family and their peers

A

Describes the way some ethnic minorities form peer groups with those from the same ethnic background as this makes them feel more comfortable

Ethnic identity (6 marker)

A

Refers to identities based around people’s ethnic background, including religion, language, norms, values etc. Asian is an ethnic identity, Ghuman says that this group shares values like obedience and respect for elders. Black Afro Caribbean is also a ethnic identity, Sewell says this group follows rap role models and had values like conspicuous consumption and rejection of education

Multiculturalism (6 marker)

A

Multiculturalism is different cultures living equally and mixing in society. They have the same status in society and have the right to preserve their heritage. The uk has an 8.9% population of ethnic minority backgrounds, Barker says this society welcomes the presence of all ethnic backgrounds. Education system contains students who speak different languages that are all treated equally.
