What is the strategy in reducing the distress and suffering caused to animals during research?

A

REPLACE - wherever possible, the use of animal testing should be replaced with testing tissue cultures etc.
REDUCE - researchers should use methods that use the minimum number of animals as possible.
REFINEMENT - every step of the experiment should be refined to minimise the pain and suffering caused to animals.
