The wider impact of research:

A

Socially sensitive research increases the potential for a more indirect impact on the participants family co-workers or even the group the participant represents

Therefore the interests of the participant shouldn’t be safeguarded alone but consideration of the likely impact on the larger group should be taken

A

Many groups in society are often excluded from research or a misrepresented when they have been included

Therefore our understanding of human behaviour has been lessened by our misinterpretations of, or our failure to include representative samples of persons who are marginalised or disadvantaged

Should socially sensitive research just be avoided?

A

It is tempting to simply avoid socially sensitive research altogether but this would leave psychologists with nothing to examine but on important issues

However avoiding controversial topics is also an avoidance of responsibility and therefore psychologists have a duty to conduct such research

A

This research has important applications. In order to reduce the likelihood of misuse of data, psychologist to be energetic in taking responsibility for what happens to their findings

They should be aware that their research might lead to abuse and discrimination
