What did the Ulster Unionists do? 🇬🇧
They fought alongside the English in WW1.
Redmond causes split in the Volunteers
He asked them to fight in the British army.
Wanted to stay in Ireland. Leader of the Irish Volunteers.
Joined the Army.
Set up to organise the Easter Rising.

Joined Military Council. Wanted a socialist republic.
Went to Germany to get guns for the rising. However his ship the 'Aud' was captured.
Arrived off Tralee on April 20th 1916. Captured by the British.
Joseph Plunkett forged
The Castle Document. It stated the British were to arrest the leaders of the volunteers. To encourage MacNeill to fight.

Leader of the Rising.
The Leaders believed their deaths would motivate Ireland into fighting back against the Brits.
24th of April 1916
Volunteers and the Irish Citizen's Army seized key building eg: The GPO, Boland's Mill, College of Surgeons, Jacob's Factory.
Came up the Liffey shelled GPO Wednesday.
Thursday the 28th
Pearse evacuated the GPO as it was on fire.
Pearse ordered the Volunteers to surrender.
500 killed. 2,500 injured.
Why were people angry?
Caused food shortages
Damage to the city
Loss of work
The British imposed...
Martial Law (military)
For the executed as many (Irish and abroad) believed it was unfair.
Media labelled rising as
Sinn Féinn Rising. They weren't involved though. Grew more popular as a result.
