canal stenosis

when ear canal fails to completely develop during 7th month in utero; results in very narrow ear canal

1

canal plasty

surgery to widen the ear canal; repairs canal stenosis

2

myringoplasty (AKA tympanoplasty)

surgery that seals perforation in the tympanic membrane

3

otitis media

* definition: inflammation and/or infection of the middle ear
* acute
* chronic: multiple infections, for a minimum of a month

4

tympanostomy tubes (AKA pressure equilization (PE) tubes)

myringometry (incision of TM) to relieve pressure in the middle ear due to otitis media

5

cholesteatoma

benign growth (tumor) of skin in middle ear; looks like onion peel of white skin formed into a ball

6

otoscopy

pearl like object; usually seen in middle or external ear; sign of cholesteatoma

7

otosclerosis

an inherited disorder involving the growth of abnormal spongy bone in the middle ear; new bone formation on stapes

8

paracusis willisii

speech is better perceived in noisy environment; frequent in otoslerosis

9

Cahart notch

conductive and bone notch on audiogram

10

stapedectomy

surgery that replaces the stapes with small prosthesis

11

perilymph fistula

leakage of inner ear fluid into the middle ear; can result from stapedectomy

12

presbycusis

hearing loss due to aging; most commonly sensorineural loss; 40% of 65+ y/o; hits males earlier

13

ototoxics

* aminoglycosides
* diuretics
* salicylates
* chemotherapeutic
* know how they affect hearing loss!

14

ototoxicity

* ear poisoning
* can be irreversible or reversible
* hearing or vestibular damage
* 743+ drugs that are known to be ototoxic
* can be from chemicals as well (work, home, air, etc)

15

signs of ototoxicity

* tinnitus
* pressure in ears
* hearing loss
* spinning sensation; dizziness

16

noise-induced hearing loss

* TTS
* PTS
* acoustic trauma

17

acoustic trauma

immediate permanent damage to cochlea from single exposure to high sound

18

occupational hearing conversation

prevention of significant permanent hearing loss resulting from on-the-job exposure to ototoxic or ototraumatic agents

19

acoustic neuroma

benign tumor on vestibular branch of VIII nerve; 95% unilateral usually 30+ years old; tinnitus first symptom; earlier discovery better

20

microtia (& its grades)

* definition: "little ear"; underdevelopment of outer ear

1. looks like normal
2. curved mass of tissue
3. small amount of bumps of tissue
4. anotia: lack of any tissue

21

auditory neuropathy / dys-synchrony

VIII nerve lesion (of unknown cause)

22

atresia

absence or incomplete formation of an external ear canal

23

external ear disorders

Malformations
* microtia
* atresia
* canal stenosis

24

middle ear disorders

* perforation
* otitis media
* cholesteatoma
* otosclerosis

25

inner ear disorders

* presbycusis
* ototoxicity
* noise induced hearing loss

26

central disorders (brain)

* acoustic neuroma
* auditory neuropathy / dys-synchrony
* APD
