they employ etching with priming/bonding or etching/priming with bonding

-dentin must be hydrated to produce a good hybrid layer (this is b/c ethced dentin no longer has HA crystals between collagen fibers on surface and these remaining fibers collapse when dehyrated which blocks monomer penetration)

-multipurpose bonding systems with 3 components will be used more so they are more flexible to accomodate the various restorative materials

amalgam bonding systems

-used for? what do they require?

A
  • used to seal underlying tooth structure and bond amalgam to enamel and dentin
  • require dual characteristics to achieve optimal wetting
  • amalgam is strongly hydrophobic and enamel and dentin and hyddrophilic
  • SO they need a wedding agent (comonomer) that can wet both amalgam and tooth structure, the most common one in 4-META (it has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic ends)

macroshear bond strength of amalgam?

  • macroshear bond strengths are relatively weak
  • but good bondind to tooth structure occur
  • micromechanical bonding at the interface of amalgam is poor and no chemical bonding occurs here
  • to get better mechanical bonding amalgam bonding system is applied in thicker layers so the amalgam being condensed against the resin adhesive layer will force fluid components of amalgam to squeeze into the unset bodning materials, producing laminations of the two materials

  • primary advantage for amalgam bonding agents is dentin sealing
  • adhesion of amalgam to tooth structure is not necessary when satisfactory retention and resistance already exist
  • primary indication for amalgam bonding is when weakened tooth structure remains and bonding may improve the overall resistance form of the restored tooth
