1
Q

What is the purpose of the decontamination cycle?

A

To remove any biological matter that may be present

To minimise risk of cross contamination and prevent infection

2
Q

What are the recommendations for manual washing?

A

Temp. <35 degrees
Enzymatic detergent used
PPE required
Scrubbing takes place below surface of water

3
Q

What are the recommendations for the ultrasonic bath?

A

Bath should be filled to required level
Enzymatic detergent used
Must run a de-gas cycle at the beginning of each day
This is a supplementary process, everything must be processed in a WD afterwards

4
Q

What is the first step in the decontamination cycle? What are the recommendations for this process?

A

Washer Disinfector
Temp. 40-65 degrees
Thermal disinfection takes place for minimum of 1 minute at 90-95 degrees
Drying phase takes place to remove excess moisture

5
Q

What is the second step in the decon cycle?

A

Inspection

To verify that parameters have been achieved

6
Q

What is the third step in the decon cycle?

A

Sterilisation in vaccum steriliser (B-type steriliser)
Used to kill any viable micro-organisms present on instruments
Steriliser starts by removing air with a series of negative pulses
134-137 degrees for a minimum of 3 minutes at 2.25 bar
There is a drying phase at the end to remove any excess moisture

7
Q

How often must equipment be tested?

A

All equipment must be tested on a daily, weekly and quarterly basis and validated annually
Challenge devices can be used to test the efficacy of the process

8
Q

What is the final stage of the decon process?

A

Instrumentation is handled, transported and used safely

9
Q

What are the stages of a washer disinfector?

A
Flush
Wash
Rinse
Disinfection
Drying
10
Q

What colour change should you see in a bowie dick test strip if the machine is working correctly?

A

Yellow to purple

Purple = working correctly

11
Q

What should be seen on the documented procedure for an instrument?

A
Type of load
Loading procedure
Choice of operating cycle
Sterile product release procedure
Trained staff
Record details of item processed
Drain water reservoir and chamber daily
12
Q

What tests are carried out on a washer disinfector?

A

Daily test = carried out on 1st cycle with instruments, known as ACT
Weekly test = carried out to test the cleaning efficacy of the machine, carried out at same time as daily test
Quarterly and Annual tests = series of tests carried out on the machine and checked against original manufacturers specification

13
Q

What tests are carried out on a steriliser?

A

Daily test = carried out on 1st cycle, chec time, temp and pressure and undertake a steam penetration test
Weekly test = safety test (check doors etc.)
ACT and steam penetration test
Air leakage test
Quarterly and Annual tests = series of tests carried out on the machine and checked against original manufacturers specification
