1
Q

Cysts

A

Anywhere in mandible and maxilla, radiolucent.

Corticated or non-corticated

Circular (always in sinus) or oval

2
Q

Cysts effect on surrounding Structures

A

Displacement - teeth, roots, canal
Root resorption - directional due to pressure
Expansion - look at borders of mandible

3
Q

Odontogenic Cysts

A
Periapical
Residual
Lateral Periodontal
Buccal Bifurcation
Dentigerous Cyst
OKC, CEOC
4
Q

Non-Odontogenic Cysts

A
Nasopalatine
Nasolabial
Dermoid
Simple Bone
Aneurysmal Bone
5
Q

Radicular Cyst (periapical cyst)

Treated w/ Root Canal, apical surgey

A

Epithelial cells in PDL are stimulated by inflammatory process.

Nonvital teeth
Swelling
Asymptomatic possibly

6
Q

Radicular Cyst (periapical cyst) Radio Features

A

At apex of non-vital tooth

Corticated border

Radiolucent

May cause tooth displacement and resorption of root

7
Q

Residual Cyst

A

Cyst formed after incomplete removal of original cyst or removal of tooth, usually asymptomatic

8
Q

Residual Cyst Radio Features

A

Usually mandible

Periapical region of edentulous area

Corticated margin

Radiolucent

May cause tooth displacement/resorption

9
Q

Buccal Bifurcation Cyst (Inflammatory)

Currettage or no treatment

A

Usually first two decades of life.

No or delay of eruption of mandibular 1st or 2nd molar

Lingual cusp displaced occlusally, roots lingually

10
Q

Dentigerous Cyst (2nd most common after periapical cyst)

Surgical removement w/ w/o marsup

A

Forms around crown of unerupted tooth. More than 6 mm big

Swelling, facial asymmetry, missing teeth

Displaces structures a lot

11
Q

Dentigerous Cyst Radio Features

A

Usually mand third molar or max canine

Corticated radiolucent that may cause expansion and displace/resorb

12
Q

Lateral Periodontal Cyst

A

Arise from epithelial rests in periodontium lateral to vital tooth root

Asymptomatic and less than 1 cm

Well defined unilocular radiolucency

13
Q

Botryoid Odontogenic Cyst (BOC)

A

Multilocular lesion with bunches of grapes look to it.

A lateral periodontal cyst variety

14
Q

Nasopalatine Canal Cyst

Tx with enucleation

A

Incisive canal cyst
Arises from epithelial remnants of nasopalatine duct
Asymptomatic or may cause palatal swelling

15
Q

Nasopalatine Canal Cyst Radiographic Features

A

Typically between max central incisors
Well defined aand corticated
Circular/oval Radiolucent
May cause roots of central incisor to diverge or resorb

16
Q

Simple Bone Cyst

Probably due to not enough blood supply

Tx w/ currettage

A

Cavity in bone line w/ connective tissue - empty cavity

First two decades

Asymptomatic

17
Q

Simple Bone Cyst Radiographic Features

A

Usually posterior mandible

Well or ill-defined border

Scallops between roots - no displacement, usually unilocular

Bound well defined in alve processes

18
Q
