A
  1. determine the severity of the crisis
  2. assess the client for safety risks and suicidal/homicidal ideation
  3. assess coping mechanisms being used
  4. understand meaning of the precipitating event to the client
  5. determine the clients social supports and willingness to use supports.
  6. focus on the immediate problem and not the clients history.

A
  1. help the client understand their reaction to a crisis as normal and temporary
  2. selectively choose and use appropriate approaches to action planning
  3. modify or eliminate past coping skills so they don’t interfere with with your current plan of attack
  4. create a contract or have the patient sign a treatment plan so you are both on the same page.
  5. identify useful referral resources
