Arg from design

3
Q

Aquinas’ first way

A
  • All that moves is moved by something else.
  • The moved is moved by something else.
  • The chain cannot by infinite.
  • Therefore there must be an unmoved mover.
  • God.

Aquinas’ Second way

A

  • There can be an infinite number of causes
  • Therefore there must be an uncaused cause
  • God

7
Q

The Fallacy of Composition

8
Q

A priori

A

Arg using reason rather than empirical evidence

9
Q

Copleston: Cause of universe?

A

God.

10
Q

Russel: Cause of universe?

A

Universe is just there.
It’s a brute fact.
It’s an explanation within itself.

11

A

on our experience that everything has a cause - aposteriori

It moves onto the assumption that the universe must have a first cause - apriori

Christian.

13

14

Russel rejects this arguing the universe is a brute fact.
