1
Q

What measurement does UTM use?

A

Meters

2
Q

Is UTM 2-D or 3-D?

A

UTM is 2-d planar! Long and lat is 3-D polar!

3
Q

What projection does the UTM use?

A

Transverse Mercator projection.

4
Q

What degree North and South does UTM cover?

A

84 degrees N and 80 degrees S

5
Q

Universal Transerve Mercator:

A

coordinates define 2 dimensional, horizontal positions.

6
Q

What degree wide is each UTM zone?

A

6 degrees wide

7
Q

What does each zone have?

A

A central Meridian!

8
Q

Whats the case with eastings?

A

eastings are measured from the central meridian eastwards. However eastings increase eastward from the central meridian which is given a false easting of 500 km so that only positive eastings are measured anywhere in the zone.

9
Q

Whats the case with northings?

A

Northings increase northward from the equator with the equators value differing in each hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere the equator has a value of 0. Four southern hemisphere locations the equator is given a false northing of 10,000km.

10
Q

degrees and measurements of a zone!

A

zone is 6 degrees wide! The distance between line of longtidue (width of a degree of latitude) at equator is 111km approximately so zone is never more than 666,000 meters wide.

11
Q

How many zones?

A

60!

12
Q

What zone does Saskatchewan use?

A

zone 13!

13
Q

UTM coordinates consist of 4 pieces of information.

A
  1. ) The hemisphere, north or south.
  2. ) The UTM zone, a number between one and 60
  3. ) An easting, a positive number with 6 digits.
  4. ) A northing, a positive number with 7 digits.
14
Q

For easting and northing it is always…..

A

Positive number!

15
Q

what geographic coordinate system does NATO use?

A

Military Grid Reference system

16
Q

Military Grid Reference system degrees.

A

6 degrees East-West and 8 degrees north-south

17
Q

Regional Reference systems:

A
  1. ) Transverse Mercator
  2. ) Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS)
  3. ) State plane coordinate system (CLSS)
  4. ) Canada Land Survey System (CLSS)
  5. ) Public Land Rectangular Survey (USPLS)
18
Q

What regional reference system is used to identify public islands?

A

Public land rectangular survey

19
Q

Cartesian Coordinates:

A

Coordinates incidicating location in a space defined by 2 baselines intersecting one another at right angles. The intersection point is the origin for location defined by distances along the 2 intersecting axes.

20
Q

Geodesy;

A

The science of earths shape and size. Also related to measuring the various gravitational force excerted by earth.

21
Q

Geodetic Datum:

A

A definition of the size, shape and orientation of the earth; datums support the development of global reference and mapping systems.

22
Q

Geoid:

A

A model of the earths surface (shape) based on the variable gravitational force exerted by the earth as an object.
