Convection, Condensation and Evaporation Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the process of convection.

A

Water heats and becomes less dense, water rises and the fast moving particles collide with the slow-moving particles and transfer heat, the water cools and becomes more dense and the water sinks.

Q

What is condensation and evaporation?

A

Condensation is when a gas turns to liquid when it cools and evaporation is when a liquid turns to gas because the particles in the liquid can escape.

Q

Give two ways in which the rates of condensation can vary.

A

Condensation - Density is higher (forces between the particles will be stronger) and temperature of the gas is lower (more particles will slow down enough to form water droplets).

Q

Give two ways in which the rates of evaporation can vary.

A

Evaporation - Density is lower (forces will be weaker) and surface area exposed is larger (more particles will slow down enough to form liquid droplets).
