1

Define leaky scanning

Absence of Kozak sequence, so start codon isnt always the same for the gene. Results in two different forms of the gene being made.

2

Define SRIC

A protein complex that scans the 5' region for an appropriate start sequence

3

What are uORFs?

upstream reading frames: located in the 5'UTR, they attenuate the transcription of the actual reading frame further downstream

4

What are IRES?

Internal Ribosome Entry Sites

5

What is the mechanism of IRES?

Produces a hairpin that can recruit specialized proteins typically associated with Cap-dependent translation
