Q

How did she use style in her design?

A
  1. Art Deco’s use of unashamedly precious material was a reminder of the wealth of empires, white its streamlined and geometric imagery celebrated the machine age and exuberance of the contemporary world. (Relate to silk it would be expensive with chemicals and the use of machines but could be cheap as synthetic materials allowed for mass production of a cheap price)
  2. The uncovering of the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt influenced Art Deco designs due to the use of gold precious materials and desire for bespoke pieces- this is seen on the back where she’s used gold embroidery on dual image
  3. Art Deco existed between the two world wars, 1910-1939, since it arose from the brutality of WW1, from it originated the concept of escapism and from this came ‘Modernism’- which was a way in which society wanted to make things better for everyone. From this concept came luxury, glamour and hedonism. This linked to Schiaparelli’s sense of fun and unconventional approach to embroidery giving a humoured effect
