Q

Describe the changes in sea level in the last 10,000 years.

A

10,000 years ago - Doggerland land bridge still linked UK to Netherlands and Denkmark from last glacial maximum.
Sea levels then rose by 10m in 500 years.
Stable for 3000 years pre-industrial revolution.
Mid-19th cenruty - started increasing

12
Q

Give an example of how tectonic activity can cause isostatic change.

A

Tohoku earthquake, Japan, 2011 - some sections of coastline dropped by 0.84m

13
Q

How does glaciation cause isostatic change?

A

During an ice age glaciers and ice sheets form over the land in areas. The land surface becomes pressed into the upper layer of the mantle causing sea levels to rise.

Q

What is isostatic recovery?

A

When the asthenosphere rebounds following the melting of ice sheet and glaciers on land

16
Q

What are the 3 causes of eustatic change?

A

Thermal expansion
Changes in ice sheet extent
Tectonic activity

17
Q

How do changes in ice sheet extent cause eustatic change?

A

The melting of ice after a glacial period leaves more water available to the oceans.

18
Q

How does tectonic activity cause eustatic change?

A

Where new land is being formed under the ocean it displaces the water

19
Q

What type of sea level rise have times of higher amounts of volcanic activity at mid-ocean ridges led to?

A

Eustatic
