1
Q

Name three depositional land forms

A

Spits, bars and tombolos

2
Q

Describe the formation of a spit

A

. It occurs due to long shore drift at sharp bends in the coastline

  1. ) The change in depth/shape of the coastline results in deposition at sharp turns at the end as its harder to carry the material.
  2. ) Strong winds and waves curve the end of the spit forming a RECURVED end
  3. ) In the sheltered area behind the curve, material accumulates and it causes a salt marsh or mudflat to form.
3
Q

Describe the formation of a tombolo

A

. It forms when LGS causes a spit causes the coast to connect to an island
. it curves a bit due to the wind
. It looks like a bridge

4
Q

Describe the formation of a bar

A

. A bar is formed when two headlands join together
. The bar cuts off the bay between the headlands from the sea
. A lagoon forms behind the bar
. It is caused by long shore drift which is caused by the prevailing wind.
. In the lagoon, salt eventually fills it creating a salt marsh

5
Q

Define lagoon

A

Area of water that is dammed by a bar .

6
Q

What should you write on your test when talking about spit, tombolo and bar?

A

LONG SHORE DRIFT AND ITS FEATURES :
. Zigzag shapes
. 45 degree angle
. Prevailing wind
