define cluster headache?

A

a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, severe headaches on one side of the head typically around the eye, tending occur in clusters lasting several weeks.

risk factors?

A
  • Genetic factor implicated
  • More common in smokers
  • Alcohol can be a trigger
  • There is a relation to nocturnal sleep

epidemiology of cluster headaches?

A
  • More common in MEN (3:1)

* Usually occurs between 20-40 yrs

presenting symptoms of cluster headaches?

A
  • episode lasting 15 mins to 2 hours
  • Clusters typically last 4-12 weeks
  • There is an intense stabbing pain around one eye
  • It is associated with redness lacrimation and lid swelling
  • Miosis and ptosis can occur
  • Often the patient will pace around

  • CLINICAL diagnosis based on history
