what are LPN's responsible for?

ultimately responsible and accountable for ensuring their own competence to carry out an activity

develop policies to explain what LPN's can do in their specific workplace

what is the BCCNP responsible for?

develops standards, limits and conditions, which complement the regulation and further define the LPN scope of practice

what is the government responsible for?

develops the LPN regulation, which provides the foundation of practice for LPN's in BC

Nurses (Licensed Practical) Regulation

- a regulation under the health profession Act
-provides a foundation for LPN scope of practice, including restricted nursing activities that LPNs can practice with or without order.

-all registered members of selected governing bodies
-purpose of the act is:
-to protect children from physical and sexual abuse
-protect vulnerable adults from physical, sexual and financial abuse
-in accordance with the implementation schedule set out by the Act, the BCCNP must receive a completed "consent to criminal record & applicable fee for: each applicant applying for initial registration, and for all registrants every 5 years

freedom of information and protection of privacy act (FOIPPA)

-BCCNP maintains a strict records-access policy to maintain the security and confidential of all information
-the philosophy governing access to registrant records is that BCCNP will release all records except when the provisions of the act protect the record, or any part of the record.
-all records related to schools, staff or registrants are considered personal records. As a result, they are protected through security and confidentiality mechanisms, as well as adherence to the provisions of the act.

the LPN maintains standards of nursing practice and professional conduct established by CLPNBC.

5. is accountable and responsible for own nursing decisions, actions and professional conduct.

-also "looking back" on our actions, decisions, thoughts and perceptions (introspective and valuable)
-helps examine ways that the nurse gathers and analyzes data, makes decisions and determines effectiveness of interventions

self care requisites

the LPN must be able to respond appropriately in situations that are stressful or involve contact. must be able to set priorities and organize actions in an environment with multiple demands

LPNs are accountable and responsible for accessing their individual fitness to practice.
-strategies need to be implemented to reduce stress and burnout.
-nurses need to be able to protect their own health as well as others.

practice standard: use of LPN title

-the nurses (LPN) regulation authorizes BCCNP registrants to use a reserved title to show that they have met BCCNP's registration requirements. BCCNP bylaws establish classes of registrants. only those individuals who have met BCCNP's requirements for registration can use a protected title
-when BCCNP grants registration to LPN's it entitles them to practice nursing in BC
- BCCNP's public registry enables the public to verify an individuals registrations status
-LPN's may also use the title "nurse" or "practical nurse; however, using "LPN" most accurately reflects your practices
