A

The NA made priests swear an allegiance to the state and promise to support the NA
Claimed there would be no recognition of any bishop appointed by the pope and not approved by the French state
The administrative structure of the church reorganised- 83 bishoprics replaced 135
Clergymen would be paid state officials

Pope declayed a decision re it

27 nov- Oath of Loyalty (assembly decreed clergy must take an oath to the consitution)

A

2/44 bishops and 1/3 clergy

55% France took oath overall

How did Pope respond to the oath?

A

April 1791- he claimed it was a ‘poisoned source of all errors’ and said clergy would be suspended from office unless they retracted the oath within 40 days

A

non-juring=refractor- not taken oath; religion>revolution
