1
Q

What are the four parts of a plant and their functions

A

Flower- reproduction
Leaves- photosynthesis
Stem- support and transport
Root- absorb nutrients from the soil

2
Q

Xylem

A

Has dead tissue on the outside and is used to transport water up the cell from the roots in transpiration

3
Q

Phloem

A

A phloem cell, which is living, transports glucose and amino acids around the cell in translocation

4
Q

Why is a xylem cell on the inner part of a plant?

A

Because it leaves the living cells on the outside meaning that it can still function and allow for plant growth while still being stable

5
Q

How are transpiration and gas exchange controlled?

A

Stomata cover the underside of the leaves
Two guard cells either side of the pore
They open or close to control transpiration and gas exchange

6
Q

How does transpiration happen?

A

Water evaporates from the leaves via the open stomata
Water is drawn up the stem to replace the lost water
Water moves into the roots through the root hair cell up into the xylem

7
Q

How does sunlight affect the rate of transpiration?

A

It causes the stomata to open so increases the rate until all the stomata are open

8
Q

How does humidity affect the rate of transpiration?

A

It decreases it as the concentration gradient is flatter

9
Q

How does wind impact the rate of transpiration?

A

It reduces the boundary layer of water vapour allowing more water to evaporate but it levels out when all the water has evaporated

10
Q

How does temperature affect the rate of transpiration?

A

It increases as it leads to an increase in energy for diffusion

11
Q

What is the function of stomata?

A

Gas exchange

12
Q

Nitrates

A

Promote growth, stunted growth if not

13
Q

Magnesium

A

Strengthens roots, yellow leaves if not

14
Q

Phosphates

A

Produces flowers and fruit
