2
Q

Induction

A
  • Involves explaining to a child what it is they did wrong and what the consequences of their actions are
  • Helps a child to identify what they did wrong and see how their behavior has affected others
  • Encourages empathy as the child learns to see from someone else’s perspective
3
Q

Love withdrawal

A
  • A parent withdraws their love for the child to make them feel guilty for their bad behavior
  • A parent may show their disapproval by imposing conditions on their affection for the child
    e. g. saying they do not love them when they are bad
  • The child’s feelings are manipulated in a way that they do not develop a sense an individuality and independence because they have been rejected
4
Q

Power assertion

A
  • When a parent uses physical and verbal punishment
    e. g. criticising a child openly or hitting them to make them behave
  • This is associated with childhood delinquency as it leads to low self-esteem because the child may not feel worthy of being loved
  • It can also develop into aggression especially if the punishment given is lengthy and severe or inconsistent punishment
5

A weakness of parental strategies

A
  • Does suggest that parents are responsible for producing a child’s delinquent behavior.
  • However, there are many other factors such as friends that contribute to delinquency
