How is Piloting used for navigation?

A

use of visible landmarks and AtoN as well as by soundings.

A

by true or magnetic course steering and using speed to determine distance traveled from a known point in a known period.

A

To represent the features of the earth’s spherical surface on the flat surface of a chart, a process termed “projection” is used. Two basic types of projection used in making piloting charts are:

• Mercator- Mercator charts are the primary charts used aboard boats. A Mercator projection is made by
transferring the surface of the globe (representing the earth) onto a cylinder.
• Gnomonic- Gnomonic projections aid in long distance navigation by allowing navigators to use great circle courses.
Gnomonic charts are not normally used for boat navigation.

A

How are Corrections entered on a chart?

A

Corrections occurring after the date of issue are published in the Notice to Mariners and
must be entered by hand on the chart of your local area upon receipt of the notice.

What is the scale of a chart reading 1:5,000,000 mean?

A

means that 1 inch is equal to 5,000,000 on the earths surface.
Large scale = small surface
Small scale = large surface
