Q

Describe 2-3 basic tenants of PCT.

A

1) Clients have a vast potential for understanding themselves and resolving their own problems and are capable of self-direction if they are in a relationship that is empathic, supportive, caring and without judgment.
2) Attitudes, personal characteristics, and authentic presence of the therapist are the prime determinants of the outcome of the therapeutic process.
3) Client’s capacity for self-healing is at the center of the therapy, not the therapists’s techniques.

Q

What is an art therapy activity that could be done using this approach? Justify why you think this activity fits under PCT.

A

Using Natalie Rogers’ person centered expressive arts approach, the therapist might ask the client to consider exploring their emotions via movement or color. The client is at the center of this therapy because the therapist offers no interpretation of the art expression.
