1
Q

What is disease?

A

When your body isn’t functioning as it should

2
Q

What are pathogens?

A

Microbes (microorganisms) which enter your body and cause disease

3
Q

What are the four main categories of disease?

A

Infections, deficiency diseases, inherited diseases, body disorders

4
Q

What are infections caused by? (give some examples)

A

Caused by pathogens (flu, AIDS)

5
Q

What are deficiency diseases caused by? (give some examples)

A

Caused by lack of a nutrient (scurvy, anaemia)

6
Q

What are inherited diseases caused by? (give some examples)

A

Caused by a faulty gene (cystic fibrosis, haemophilia)

7
Q

What are body disorders caused by? (give some examples)

A

Caused by many things (diabetes, cancers)

8
Q

What are the four pathogens?

A

Bacteria, plasmodium/protists, viruses and fungus

9
Q

When does your body show symptoms (eg. Fever, nausea)?

A

When there are sufficient pathogens in your body

10
Q

What is the secondary defence system in your body?

A

The immune system

11
Q

What is the primary defence system?

A

Your skin, mucus in lungs, tears etc

12
Q

What do white blood cells do?

A

Manufacture antibodies against the pathogen

13
Q

White blood cells acting against the pathogen can sometimes be enough, but can be used if not?

A

Antibiotics can be used to kill the bacteria, or other treatment, but if the body can’t overcome it, death occurs

14
Q

When does an infection occur?

A

When a pathogen or a disease causing microbe invades and multiplies inside another organism

15
Q

Why do pathogens, like bacteria, make us feel ill?

A

Because they damage our cells, but more often because they produce toxins

16
Q

What are toxins?

A

Poisonous chemicals which make us feel ill

17
Q

Why do pathogens do well in human bodies?

A

Because conditions are ideal for multiplication and growth - plenty of water and resources, and optimum temperature for growth
