Q

What is attention?

A

Act of focusing on a particular stimulus in the environment, while excluding competing stimuli.

2
Q

What are the 5 ways to keep or gain attention?

A

The use of the unknown, Wow factor, humor, movement, and intensity.

3
Q

How does the use of the unknown help gain attention?

A

People love learning new things or hearing a story they have never heard and are naturally inclined to listening in.

4
Q

What is the wow factor and dangers associated with it?

A

It is startling information, facts, and even straight up disturbing images or stories. It can be dangerous to use it because the audience may be repulsed by your speech from strange, bizarre, or inappropriate behavior (GIVE THE SPEECH NAKED I DARE YOU!).

5
Q

What are some things to remember when using humor in a speech?

A

Do not force it, stay focused, be sensitive, and above all use self-deprecating humor to keep your audience laughing with you and not attacking you.

6
Q

Why is movement important in a speech?

A

It indicates that you are moving onto another point or sub-point in your speech, which can help listeners flow through your speech.

7
Q

What is intensity in speaking and how can it be effective with audience attention?

A

It is concentrated stimuli that help drive home a point a speaker is trying to make. It is only effective when used sparingly; overuse will either cause the audience to be hung up on something in your speech or tune out entirely.
