Q

What are the four types of speech delivery? Why are there different kinds of speeches?

A

Manuscript, memorized, impromptu, and extemporaneous speaking. The different types serve different functions, events, and even are good for different forms of practice.

2
Q

What are advantages and disadvantages of manuscript speaking?

A

It is both formal and easy to use. Political correctness is not difficult to write into a speech. It can also become robotic, cold, and boring if speakers to don’t adapt to their audience.

3
Q

What are advantages and disadvantages of memorized speaking?

A

It is impressive and also useful if the speech is short. Past the two minute mark, forgetting what you were going to say is much easier and can cause your speech to crumble.

4
Q

What are advantages and disadvantages of impromptu speaking?

A

It is good for quick practice and these are generally short speeches. You also get to reference life experience and your own basic knowledge on a given topic. It helps to make and use key points and summarize your speech. The only drawback is there is no preparation period, generally you have just a few minutes to gather your thoughts.

5
Q

What are advantages and disadvantages of extemporaneous speaking?

A

It is an outline style speech that uses main points and subpoints to reach speaking goals. The details are impromptu because the speech is not created word for word. This method also allows a speaker to maintain better eye contact and respond to audience feedback as it occurs. The only drawback of this style is if a poor outline is written and unorganized, then the speech will also be poor.

6
Q

What are some important aspects of speaking to an audience?

A

Maintain eye contact, use voice inflection and pitch to create some variety and avoid monotone speaking.

7
Q

What are vocal fillers and how do they affect speaking presentation?

A

Vocal fillers are words like um, uh, like, erm, and other jargon. They tend to make a speech sound boring, slow, or unorganized.

8
Q

Why is speed in a speech so important, both for the body and the voice of the speaker?

A

If a good pace is maintained, the speaker’s message is clear and easy to understand. Movement in a speech is also necessary, but balance is key in order to keep audience focus. If the speaker huddles in place or always grips the podium, the audience will be distracted from the message of the speech.

9
Q

What is the most important part about the specific words chosen in a speech?

A

Proper articulation and pronunciation help further deliver the speaker’s message and make him/her also seem educated and respectable.
