1
Q

What are the three critical components of the IDE hard drive?

A

Controller chip, hard disk, and Host bus adapter. (p.70)

2
Q

Describe the function of the controller chip.

A

It controls how the drive operates and how the data is encoded onto the platters. It controls how the data sends signals to the motors in the drive and receives signals from sensors inside the drive. (p.70)

3
Q

How much memory is commonly stored on a sector?

A

512 K Bytes p. 72

4
Q

What translates information from the hard drive to the bios?

A

The controller chip. The controller for the hard drive knows exactly how the sectors are laid out within each platter (disk). It takes direction from the BIOS when writing information to and reading information from the drive. The BIOS does not always understand the geometry of the drive because it does not support more than 63 sectors per track The controller chip translates for the BIOS. (p. 72-73)

5
Q

How can you determine the number of KB the hard drive can store?

A

By the value of CHS (cylinders/heads/sectors). The number of cylinders is the number of tracks ta can be found on any surface of a single platter. The number of heads are the number of writable surfaces in the assembly. There is one head on each side of the platter. Multiply the number of cylinders by the number of heads you get the number of tracks. Multiply this by the number of sectors per track you get the total number of sectors. Divide this number by 2 and you get the total KB. Divide by 1024 to convert to MB and again to get GB. (p.73)

6
Q

What are tracks in newer hard drives?

A

A magnetically drawn ring around the surface of platters. p. 72.

7
Q

What are some characteristics of SSD drives?

A

Solid State Drives have no moving parts. It is limited to a finite number of write/erase operations. They can read contents more quickly and produce less heat. p.75

8
Q

What are two categories of SSD?

A

violitile DRAM based and non volitile flash based. p.75

9
Q

Identify some Optical Storage Drives.

A

Blue ray Disc, DVD, CD drives. p.77

10
Q

What is the difference between DVD ROM and DVD RAM.

A

DVD ROM has data encoded but not able to be changed, DVD RAM is Purchased blank. IT can be written to or erased and no session to close before access to the stored data. p.78, 83.

11
Q

What is another name for IDE Drive.

A

PATA Drive or ATA drive. p.84

12
Q

Define IDE Drive.

A

Any drive that has a built in controller. p.85

13
Q

What does the Acronymn SMART stand for?

A

Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology- allows a hard drive to monitor itself and warns of impending failure.

14
Q

What does the terminator do in an SCSI (Skuzzy) drive?

A

It is a resistor pack installed at both ends of the bus to keep the signals on the bus. p. 89

15
Q

What does RAID Stand for?

A

Redundant Array of Independent DIscs that combine the storage power of more than one hard disc for a special purpose such as increased performance. p. 92

16
Q

Define Raid 1

A

Also known as disk mirroring. It is a method of producing fault tolerance by writing all data simultaneously to two separate drives. If one drive fails the other contains all data and becomes the primary. p.93

17
Q

Define Raid 0

A

Also known as disk stripping, where a striped set of equal space from at least two rives creates a larger volume. p.93

18
Q

What is Raid 5.

A

It combines the benefits of both Raid 0 and Raid 1, creatin

19
Q

What does Hot Swappable device mean?

A

You can insert and remove the device witht he system on. Most of the time through the USB port. p.102

20
Q

What unit of measurement are power supplies measured in?

A

Watts. p.107

21
Q

What does an AT system connector do.

A

Carries electricity to the motherboard to power it. p.109

22
Q

How are ATX connectors different than AT connectors?

A

They have a single 20 pin connector. It is easier to work with. p.111

23
Q

What are some charachtaristics of ATX12V2.2

A

It hasa 150W 8 pin connector. p.112

24
Q

Describe a SATA connector

A

15 pin. THe connector is made up of three 3.3 V three 5V and three 12V leads. p.115

25
Q

What does the AC adapter of the laptop do?

A

converts AC to DC for the laptops internal components. p.117
